National Day Of Mourning For Jimmy Carter: What’s Open And Closed In New Jersey

President Joe Biden issued an executive order declaring today, Thursday, January 9, 2025, a National Day of Mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, at the age of 100. The day of mourning coincides with Carter’s state funeral.

On National Days of Mourning, federal offices, courts, and stock markets traditionally close to honor the late president.

Here’s what to expect in New Jersey:

  • Federal Offices and Services: Federal offices, courts, and agencies will be closed. The U.S. Postal Service announced that all post offices will close, and there will be no mail delivery, though limited package deliveries will continue. UPS, FedEx, and Amazon will operate as usual.
  • Stock Markets: The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed. Bond markets will close early at 2 p.m. EST.
  • Schools: Most public schools will remain open, but military academies will be closed.
  • Retail, Banks, and State Services: Retail stores, grocery stores, restaurants, and banks are expected to remain open, though operating hours may vary. New Jersey state offices and courts will remain open, but federal courts, including the U.S. District Court for New Jersey, will be closed.
  • Transportation: Amtrak trains will operate on their regular schedule.

The last National Day of Mourning occurred in 2018 for President George H.W. Bush.
