Manchester Township has named Dawson Palmarini as its newest Honorary Police Officer, Firefighter, and Emergency Medical Technician—a powerful tribute to a young man whose life embodies resilience, gratitude, and purpose.
Now 23, Dawson’s journey began with tragedy. On July 20, 2019, at just 17 years old, he was critically injured in a motorcycle crash in Toms River, where he was thrown roughly 30 feet and found unresponsive. Thanks to the swift coordination of police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel, Dawson was resuscitated at the scene and airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.
What followed was a grueling battle for survival and recovery. Dawson sustained three traumatic brain injuries and was placed in a medically induced coma. He spent three months in the ICU and trauma unit before being transferred to Children’s Specialized Hospital in New Brunswick. Once discharged, he faced the monumental task of relearning how to walk, speak, and perform basic daily functions.
But Dawson’s story didn’t end with recovery—it evolved into a mission. Driven by a deep sense of appreciation for the first responders who saved his life, he set out on a statewide journey to personally thank every police, fire, and EMS agency in New Jersey. To date, he has been named an honorary member of 23 different agencies across the state, as well as the Philadelphia Police Department.
On Monday night, Dawson and his father, Vincent Palmarini, were welcomed into the Township Council chambers, where Municipal Clerk Teri Giercyk administered his Oath of Office. The ceremony was attended by Chief of Police Antonio Ellis, Director of Emergency Services Robert Baran, and members of the Township Council.
“Dawson’s story is nothing short of extraordinary,” said Chief Ellis. “To come through what he did, and now dedicate his life to honoring others—he represents the very best of us.”
To commemorate the occasion, Chief Ellis and Director Baran presented Dawson with department patches, challenge coins, and custom shirts symbolizing his new honorary roles.
