With less than a week until Election Day, New Jersey voters are already turning out in significant numbers. As of Wednesday, 825,382 ballots have been cast statewide — representing about 12.6% of all registered voters, according to a new analysis by VoteHub. When inactive voters are excluded from the count, turnout rises to roughly 13.5%.
Among those who have already voted — whether by mail or in person — 54.4% are registered Democrats, 28% are Republicans, and 17.6% are unaffiliated or independent voters.
Mail-in ballots continue to account for the majority of early votes. A total of 514,180 vote-by-mail ballots have been returned, equal to 55% of all ballots mailed by county clerks. Democrats make up the largest share of those returns, with 321,647 ballots (62.6%), compared to 108,279 from Republicans (21.1%) and 84,254 from unaffiliated or independent voters (16.4%).
Democrats also hold a clear edge in overall mail ballot requests — 57% compared to 20% for Republicans. Both parties are returning their ballots at similar rates, however: 60.2% for Democrats and 58.6% for Republicans. Among unaffiliated voters, just over a third (36.6%) have returned their mail ballots.
Meanwhile, 311,202 voters have already cast in-person ballots during the first four days of New Jersey’s nine-day early voting period. That group skews slightly more competitive: 41% Democratic, 39.4% Republican, and 19.6% unaffiliated or independent.
Early voting in New Jersey runs through Sunday, with Election Day set for Tuesday, November 4.
