A 65-year-old man was killed in a house fire on Panda Lane in Manchester Township last Wednesday night, authorities announced.
According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, emergency responders from the Manchester Township Police and Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene at approximately 9:05 p.m. During a search of the residence, firefighters discovered the body of the homeowner, identified as Michael Seaman.
An investigation conducted by multiple agencies — including the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the Manchester Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office — determined that the fire originated from a mattress in a bedroom located in the southwest corner of the home.
Officials concluded that the fire was accidental and caused by careless smoking.
A post-mortem examination conducted by the Ocean County Medical Examiner on July 10 confirmed that Mr. Seaman died from smoke inhalation. His death was ruled accidental.
