In a tragic incident on Friday afternoon, a 56-year-old man from Berkeley Township lost his life when he was ejected from a garbage truck during a collision on the Garden State Parkway in Ocean County. New Jersey State Police have identified the victim as David Mello Jr. of Bayville. The accident occurred at approximately 1:18 p.m. in the southbound area near milepost 82.8.
According to Sergeant Philip Curry of the New Jersey State Police, Mello was operating a Peterbilt 320 garbage truck when he veered off the Parkway towards the right, colliding with several trees along the way. The impact of the crash caused him to be ejected from the vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries. Despite immediate response from emergency personnel, Mello succumbed to his injuries at the crash site.
During the investigation, the southbound lanes of the Garden State Parkway remained accessible to motorists. However, the heavy traffic caused significant congestion, with traffic delays stretching as far north as Wall Township. Additionally, local roads experienced increased congestion as drivers sought alternative routes to avoid the Parkway gridlock.
The New Jersey State Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident. Sergeant Curry stated that further details will be revealed as the investigation progresses. The tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers faced by motorists on busy highways and the importance of exercising caution while driving.
