On Sunday night, at Popular and County Line, a mother and daughter were struck and seriously injured while simply trying to cross the street. It was not the first such incident along this corridor — and unless officials act, it will not be the last.
County Line Road has become one of the most dangerous stretches in Ocean County. Entire blocks are shrouded in darkness, crosswalks are few and far between, and traffic moves at a pace completely mismatched to the residential neighborhoods and businesses that line the route. Residents who live, work, and shop here are forced to take their lives in their hands just to get across.
The failure is clear. Local and state officials have known for years about the risks posed by County Line Road and Route 9. They have heard the community’s pleas for lighting, pedestrian crossings, and basic safety upgrades. Yet little has changed. Every day of inaction leaves more families at risk of enduring the same nightmare that unfolded Sunday night.
This is not a matter for more studies, more committees, or more empty promises. It is a matter of urgency. Streetlights, upgraded signals, pedestrian refuges, and traffic-calming measures are not luxuries — they are necessities. They are the difference between safe passage and a trip to the emergency room.
County Line Road is a crisis waiting to happen again. Officials in Lakewood, Jackson, Ocean County, and Trenton must move now — not after the next accident. The public has waited long enough.
Lives are at stake, and every delay makes the next tragedy more likely. The community deserves safe streets. It’s past time government delivered.

hope Road creates a back up on county line Road ….14 th Street is filling in the gaps as the lights change. There’s no room for cars to move off of county line Road creates an immense danger on County line Road for cars attempting to right turn onto Hope and left turn onto Hope because the cars don’t move.. good place to avoid certain times of the day… safe travels everybody
The county can change signs put up more traffic lights and spend taxpayers’ money all you can do will not stop stupid drivers. Roads don’t cause accidents, drivers do.
