LISTEN: Lakewood Fire Department Rolls Out AI Dispatcher for Emergency Responses

The Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners and Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr have announced the launch of a new, state-of-the-art Fire Station Alerting System (FSAS), marking a major modernization of the township’s emergency response infrastructure.

The newly installed Phoenix G2 system, developed by US Digital Designs, replaces older dispatch methods with an IP-based platform designed to speed up communication, improve accuracy, and support firefighter wellness. The technology is used by leading fire departments nationwide and is engineered to reduce the interval between a 911 call and the moment crews receive their dispatch.

The Phoenix G2 system automates station alerts and transmits dispatch information over a high-speed digital network. This allows multiple stations and individual responders to receive incident details almost instantly. Officials say the system’s digital delivery reduces delays, improves precision, and ensures that crews begin mobilizing with consistent information.

One of the most notable features of the new alerting system is its focus on reducing stress and fatigue for firefighters. The platform uses zoned alerting, activating only the specific units needed for a call rather than sounding alarms throughout an entire station.

It also incorporates “heart-friendly” alerting — ramping tones and gradually increasing lights that wake personnel at night in a calmer, more controlled manner than traditional sirens.

The department emphasized several additional features that boost preparedness and reduce the risk of communication errors:

  • VoiceAlert Technology: Automated text-to-speech audio provides clear incident briefings, reducing miscommunications due to unclear radio transmissions.
  • Visual Reinforcement: High-contrast message boards display real-time call information, including cross streets, business names, and potential hazards.
  • Mobile Connectivity: A companion app delivers verbal and written alerts to responders’ personal devices, along with mapping and turn-by-turn navigation to the scene.

Officials said the new system reflects Lakewood’s commitment to expanding emergency-response capabilities as the township continues to grow.
