Lakewood Township municipal employees are stepping up in the fight against breast cancer with the creation of a special fundraising team, the “Lakewood Squad,” at the upcoming 2025 New Jersey More Than Pink Walk. The walk is set for Sunday, October 5, at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson.
The walkathon is part of the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure initiative, a leading breast cancer foundation that has invested more than $1.1 billion in research and support services. The organization hosts similar events across the country, raising millions to fund medical research and provide critical resources for patients and families.
For Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles, the effort carries deep personal meaning. Coles, along with both of his parents and two sisters, battled and survived cancer. But in recent months, he has also witnessed three close friends lose their lives to the disease.
“The support of friends, family, our communities and medical professionals was critical to our recoveries,” Coles said. “We must do whatever we can to raise awareness of the need for regular screenings; fund research to end this scourge; and support patients and their families, as well as the families of those unfortunately no longer with us. I’m proud to help lead Lakewood Township’s effort in this battle.”
Trish Komsa, the township’s Chief Operating Officer and Director of Human Resources, said the “Lakewood Squad” reflects both the spirit of Lakewood’s municipal workforce and its commitment to public health.
“Forming a team for the Susan G. Komen Walk is a reflection of who we are at Lakewood Township—not just colleagues, but a community that shows up for one another,” Komsa said. “It’s a chance to step outside the office and walk side by side for a cause that touches so many lives. Together, we honor, support, and inspire—strengthening the bonds that bring us together every day.”
The 2025 New Jersey More Than Pink Walk is open to family, friends, and members of the public. Organizers encourage anyone interested in joining or donating to visit the team’s fundraising page: Lakewood Squad – More Than Pink Walk.
