The Township of Lakewood Township has approved a series of agreements providing municipal fuel support to several volunteer emergency and public-safety organizations, formalizing a program aimed at offsetting operating costs tied to their community services.
Under the agreements, Chaveirim of Lakewood, Lakewood Civilian Safety Watch (LCSW)/Shomrim, Hatzolah of Central Jersey, and Lakewood Search & Rescue will each be eligible to receive up to $2,400 per month in gasoline from the Township’s Public Works Department. The fuel is intended to support vehicles used in the course of each organization’s volunteer activities.
As part of the approval, the Township imposed accountability requirements on participating organizations. Fuel usage and related activities must be logged and submitted for review by the police chief, ensuring the gasoline is used strictly for authorized volunteer operations.
The agreements are set to run from January 1 through December 31, 2026, providing a yearlong framework for the fuel support program.
Township officials noted that the approved list reflects existing organizations currently recognized under the program. No timeline was provided for when additional organizations might be considered for inclusion.
Lakewood relies heavily on volunteer-based emergency and assistance groups to supplement municipal services, particularly during emergencies, severe weather, and high-demand situations. Officials have previously emphasized that programs like the fuel agreements help sustain these organizations while maintaining oversight of public resources.
