The Lakewood Police Department on Tuesday issued a friendly reminder to people using electric bikes and scooters in the township that they “must follow the same regulations as traditional bicycles.”
“All riders must comply with all the laws that apply to vehicles, such as obeying traffic signals and following the direction of traffic. Drive safely, Lakewood,” the police department wrote in a Facebook post.
E-bike and e-scooter usage has risen dramatically in Lakewood over the past several years, with unintended consequences. Several riders of the bikes and scooters have been seriously injured after being struck by vehicles who didn’t notice them – or after they zipped in front of the cars on Lakewood roadways.
To make matters worse, many motorists complain of e-bikes and e-scooters being driven recklessly on roads – often by individuals far too young to be behind the wheel of a car.
Health officials have been warning for years of injuries sustained by riders of electric bikes and scooters, and Hatzolah has warned parents of the risk of serious injury to children who use them.
What about thise who drive them in walkways and often injure people who are walking in an otherwise safe area? There have even been extreme fatalities of loss of life from these electric bikes! It’s time to an end the laws and limit the ages of these drivers and require?a license of sorts for these operators!
