The Lakewood Police Department is reminding residents that New Jersey’s new e-bike law takes effect on July 20, 2026, and will bring several new requirements for riders.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Under the new law, riders must be at least 15 years old to operate an e-bike. Anyone younger than 15 is not allowed to ride one.
- The law recognizes two types of e-bikes. A low-speed e-bike provides motor assistance only while pedaling and stops helping once the bike reaches 20 miles per hour. A motorized bicycle, sometimes called a moped, can be operated with a throttle and can reach assisted speeds of up to 28 miles per hour.
- All riders must wear a helmet. There are no exceptions.
- Riders must have a valid driver’s license, e-bike license, or e-bike permit. Riders who are 17 or older can use a regular driver’s license. Riders ages 15 and 16 will need a special e-bike license.
- All e-bikes will also need to be registered with the MVC. Motorized bicycles must carry liability insurance, while low-speed e-bikes do not need insurance but still must be registered.
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) has not yet started issuing e-bike licenses or permits, but officials say more information will be released in the future.
Riders who fail to follow the new rules may face fines starting at $50.

Do they need helmets like motorcyclists? How bout headlights, rear stop lights, and turn signals
It says helmets required. Lights are required even on bicycles (and are also required on stand-up scooters which are exempt from registration and licensing).
It doesn’t say anywhere about rear stop light and blinkers for e-bikes as for motorcycle.
