Don’t panic if you see a drone overhead somewhere in Lakewood. It’s probably the Lakewood Police Department’s (LPD) new drone, an additional set of eyes for local safety following months of financial investment, research, and training. Lakewood is among the only police department in the State to have such a drone and the first in the Central/South Jersey region.
The drone, which can operate under virtually all weather conditions, serves as a general police observation tool and can reach specific crime and/or accident scenes within seconds – well before officers can physically arrive. The images and videos captured are invaluable towards helping police and other emergency services respond effectively. It can also capture clear images of suspects, license plates, and other crucial information.
At a soft launch for the drone held at Town Hall, Police Chief Greg Meyer took pride in the LPD’s continuous raising of the bar. “Lakewood is the largest municipality in Ocean County and the surrounding region,” Chief Meyer pointed out, “and we will continue being proactive and leading the way to provide our residents with the most sophisticated, effective public safety systems available.”
“It is heartwarming to see our Police Department demonstrate their clear understanding and knowledge of this new technology and its operation,” said Committeeman and Emergency Services Liaison Meir Lichtenstein. “The initial seconds and minutes in an emergency are pivotal, and this drone will no doubt serve as a tremendous lifesaving asset for Lakewood residents.”
“Once again, the Lakewood Police Department and other Lakewood Township officials have combined their talents, hard work, and dedication to serve and protect Lakewood,” said Committeewoman Debbie Fuentes. “Everyone works together as a team, and the results speak for themselves once again!”
