The Lakewood Township Committee recently approved the hiring additional “Class II” Special Law Enforcement Officers (SLEO) to assist the Lakewood Police Department’s regular police force with a variety of security and auxiliary needs.
Class II officers undergo similar training as ordinary officers and carry weapons while on duty. They assist with various special duties, such as Court security, Downtown patrols, suspect booking and transportation; traffic control and security at events; etc.; enabling the regular police force to maximize their public safety patrols.
One full-time and three part-time Class II officers were hired, offering yet another key personnel boost to the Department in New Jersey’s fourth largest – and fastest growing – municipality. Dozens of new officers were hired in recent years, under the tenure of Chief Gregory Meyer, for the Department’s regular force as well.
“Needless to say, we immensely value the service of our men and women in blue who put their lives on the line for the public each day,” says Committeeman Meir Lichtenstein. “It will always be our top priority to ensure that the Lakewood Police Department has all the resources it needs to keep Lakewood residents safe and enhance our Town’s quality-of-life.”
“We are excited to welcome our newest dedicated police officers on board,” says Patrol Division Commander, Captain Steve Allaire. “The Lakewood Police Department greatly appreciates the strong, consistent support that the Township Committee and Township Manager Pat Donnelly have given us, enabling us to continuously make strides on the Lakewood public safety scene.”
