Lakewood officials have taken down a controversial four-way stop sign at the intersection of Ridge Avenue and Shemen Street after implementing it without obtaining necessary county approvals.
The stop sign had been installed following a petition by 20 residents from Shemen Street and nearby areas who requested the measure to facilitate left turns onto Ridge Avenue. However, Ridge Avenue is a county road, meaning any changes require approval from Ocean County—a step Lakewood officials bypassed to placate the petitioners.
The four-way stop quickly sparked criticism from local residents, who argued that Ridge Avenue’s high traffic volume made the stop sign a hazardous addition. Many noted that it disrupted traffic flow and increased the potential for accidents.
On Tuesday morning, the four-way stop was quietly removed.
Why the four-way stop sign was installed by Lakewood officials without county approval might be a mystery to some, but we think we know quite well who they were trying to keep happy – whether it was legal or not.

I’m surprised the stop sign wasn’t initiated with an “ask the mayor” question on the township’s blog.
how interesting!!! The mayor claimed it was for safety reasons not because of the residents! Knew it made no sense
I’d like to request a 4-way stop sign in front of my driveway.
I have 20+ signatures left over from the previous election.
We need to protest against the township government for allowing building on Route 9 and we must allow the state to widen it !!! End building on Route 9 and it is unacceptable!!! The state should force the people along Route 9 to move so they can widen it to end dangerous traffic!!!!
who was it put in for?
You really need to ask this? Who runs Lakewood? I give you one guess the same ones that make every accident
That’s a rhetorical question.
And who’s paying for it’s installation, removal, and other costs?
who is going to pay for all this wasted tax money?
Interesting that another website removed the psa about it going in😱
Iykyk
An the idea on the cost of installing and removing the stop signs? Including the cost of the LPD OFFICERS that were stationed there? Talk about wasteful spending? Will there be accountability?
