Residents in parts of the Route 88 area of Lakewood may notice authorized canvassing crews visiting neighborhoods as part of ‘s ongoing Lead Service Line Replacement Program.
According to the utility’s contractor, CDM Smith, crews are currently working within Census Tract 7152.02 to identify homes that may have lead or galvanized steel water service lines. The effort is part of a statewide initiative mandated by a 2021 New Jersey law requiring all water providers to identify and replace lead and galvanized service lines by 2031.
Residents can participate by submitting photos of their water service pipes directly to New Jersey American Water or by scheduling a free in-person inspection. Authorized canvassers may also visit designated properties to assist homeowners. Inspections typically take about 15 minutes and do not require residents to provide any personal financial information or documentation.
Officials remind residents that all canvassers will wear high-visibility vests displaying New Jersey American Water and CDM Smith logos and will carry official identification. All inspections and replacement work are being conducted solely by New Jersey American Water and its authorized contractors, not by Lakewood Township or any other government agency.
Lakewood residents may continue using their water as normal. New Jersey American Water states that the water supply continues to meet all state and federal water quality standards, including those related to lead.
