4th and Monmouth has for long been a key intersection in Downtown Lakewood. A crossroad to various sides of town – located near populous neighborhoods and busy shops – this thoroughfare sees a substantial amount of both vehicular and pedestrian traffic throughout the day.
Now, the intersection is fresh and bright, with a slew of modern upgrades. The road is freshly paved and striped, with handicap accessible ramps at each corner. Additionally, the traffic signals at the intersection are new and hi-tech. Bolder, brighter signals direct traffic; while a combination of signal sensors and pedestrian buttons help determine signal-changing in real time, to best balance the needs of both pedestrians and vehicles onsite. There is also a unique audio countdown feature that advises pedestrians by voice when the next signal change is.
Lakewood Township officials and engineers have meticulously planned these improvements and put the wheels in motion through their ultimate fruition.
Mayor Ray Coles notes that the Fourth and Monmouth improvements are mere merely the latest on a long list of infrastructure improvement projects throughout Lakewood that the Township – along with State and/or County partners, where applicable – is in the process of working on, or have recently been completed. “We are constantly working to enhance both safety and traffic flow for Lakewood residents,” says Mayor Coles, “and look forward to continue making progress on this front, project by project.”
