Lakewood Mayor Coles: Additional Trash Pickups Impossible, $7 Million In State Funds Will Reduce Property Tax Increase [VIDEO]

Lakewood Mayor Ray Coles responded to two emailed questions at the Township Committee’s most recent meeting, which is still being held over Zoom – the only New Jersey municipality to be doing so since Covid-19 restrictions were lifted.

The first question pertained to garbage. The resident asked if garbage pickups could be conducted twice a week during the summer months, considering that garbage sitting for seven days at a time attracts flying insects and creates a putrid smell.

“We’d love to consider it, but there’s no way that we can financially or physically do this at any time of the year at this point,” Coles said in response.

A second question was then read, asking whether the $7 million state funds recently secured by Assemblyman Schnall and Senator Singer would be used to lower property taxes in Lakewood.

“That is exactly what it’s used for,” Coles said. “It’s being put directly into the budget to help defray and tax increase we are going to have this year.”
