As temperatures drop, the Lakewood Fire Department is urging residents to stay vigilant about fire safety during the winter months. According to their latest advisory, half of all home heating fires occur in December, January, and February, making this a critical time for households to reduce fire hazards.
Key fire risks highlighted include heating equipment, which is involved in one out of every six home fires and one in five fire-related deaths. Space heaters are particularly dangerous, with nearly half of all space heater fires linked to electric models.
To minimize risks, the department advises residents to:
- Keep flammable materials at least three feet away from any heat source.
- Plug only one heat-producing appliance into an electrical outlet at a time.
- Install and test carbon monoxide alarms monthly.
- Have chimneys and vents cleaned and inspected annually by a professional.
Additionally, the department stresses the importance of keeping fire hydrants clear of snow and debris to ensure quick access in case of emergencies.
In the event of an emergency, residents should call 911 immediately.
