Lakewood Fire Chief Jonathan Yahr was honored Thursday as the 2025 Fire Chief of the Year by the New Jersey State Fire Chiefs Association, a recognition that underscores his leadership within one of the state’s fastest-growing communities.
The award was presented during the association’s annual meeting at the New Jersey State Fireman’s Convention in Wildwood, where the Fire Chief of the Year honor was conferred alongside the Valor Awards ceremony recognizing acts of bravery. The accolade was made possible through funding by the New Jersey Deputy and Battalion Chiefs Association and its president, Charlie Zeek.
Yahr, who has led the Lakewood Fire Department through a period of rapid expansion and modernization, credited the department’s rank-and-file, officers, administrators, and the township’s Board of Fire Commissioners for the collective achievements that led to the recognition.
“This award, while presented to me, is not mine alone,” Yahr said in remarks following the ceremony. “It is the culmination of teamwork… Getting recognition from a well-respected organization for what we as a team accomplish is the icing on the cake. This award belongs to all of you, Lakewood Fire Department.”
The honor comes as the Lakewood Fire Department continues to adapt to the township’s explosive population growth, rising call volumes, and increasing demands on emergency services. Yahr emphasized his commitment to ensuring the department remains equipped to meet those challenges, describing the award as motivation to continue strengthening the institution.
