Lakewood EMS Adds New Ambulance, Announces Two Promotions

Lakewood EMS has added a new ambulance to its fleet and announced two personnel promotions, citing rising call volume and continued population growth in the township.

The agency, which fields more than 10,000 emergency calls annually, said the new vehicle is its fifth ambulance and the first all-new rig added to the fleet in several years.

Officials said the ambulance features the largest front cabin and most powerful engine currently in service with Lakewood EMS. It is also equipped with four-wheel drive to improve performance during severe weather and in off-road or difficult terrain conditions.

Alongside the fleet upgrade, Lakewood EMS announced the promotion of Senior EMT Jose Ortiz to the rank of captain. Ortiz has served with the agency for nearly three decades and is recognized for his work as an instructor in multiple lifesaving techniques. In addition, Ronald Hill, a veteran EMT with more than 20 years of service, has been promoted to the position of Senior EMT.

“With Lakewood EMS’s constant growth and enhancement, our personnel are as motivated and equipped as ever to save lives around the clock,” said Chief Crystal Van de Zilver. “We congratulate Jose and Ronald on their well-deserved promotions, which will help lead our team and services towards continued new heights.”

Township Committeeman and Emergency Services Liaison Meir Lichtenstein also praised the promotions, citing both men’s experience and service record.

“Having seen Jose and Ron in the field over the years, I can attest that they are both highly skilled and genuinely compassionate,” Lichtenstein said. “The Township Committee looks forward to continue working with them and the rest of our EMS team, and provide them with all necessary resources, so that our residents can rely on prompt, professional EMS services during their times of need.”

Lakewood EMS officials said the new ambulance and leadership changes are part of ongoing efforts to maintain response capacity and service quality as demand for emergency medical services continues to increase in the township.
