Lakewood BOE Member Moshe Raitzik Resigns After Being Elected Fire Commissioner

Board of Education member Moshe Raitzik has resigned from his position following his recent election to the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners, citing a New Jersey law that bars individuals from holding two elected public offices simultaneously.

In a letter submitted Tuesday morning to the Superintendent and district officials, Raitzik said his resignation took effect at 11:59 a.m.

“Due to my recent election to the Lakewood Board of Fire Commissioners, I am required by N.J.S.A. 19:3-5.2 to vacate my current position as a Board of Education member, as it prohibits holding simultaneous elective public offices in New Jersey, since 2007,” Raitzik wrote.

Raitzik, who had served on the Board of Education during a period of significant fiscal and enrollment challenges for the district, thanked colleagues and the community for their support.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to represent the children, parents, and indeed all residents of Lakewood, and I’m grateful for the experience and insights gained during my time on the board,” he said. “I’m proud of the progress we’ve made together and am confident that, under your steady guidance, the Lakewood school district will continue to thrive.”

He also expressed appreciation for the work of district administrators, staff and fellow board members, noting their “collaborative dedication and hard work.”

With Raitzik’s departure, the Board of Education will now begin the process of appointing someone to fill the remainder of his term. In his resignation letter, Raitzik urged board members to select an individual committed to advocating for students.

“I trust that the individual whom you will vote for to complete my term will be one who does not shy away from speaking up to defend and advocate for the students who rely on the board to be their voice,” he wrote.

Raitzik said he is willing to assist in the transition. “If I can be of assistance or provide any information to facilitate a smooth transition, please don’t hesitate to reach out,” the letter concluded.

The Board has not yet announced a timeline for selecting his replacement.
