A sweeping failure of Jackson Township’s government email system Monday morning has brought municipal operations to a virtual standstill — and raised serious questions about accountability, transparency, and the township’s digital infrastructure.
From the Township Council to the police department, Department of Public Works, zoning, inspections, and every other corner of Jackson’s local government, email communications remain completely down, cutting off essential services and crippling the ability of departments to respond to resident concerns.
But the outage itself may not be the most troubling part. The individuals responsible for managing Jackson’s email infrastructure initially claimed that the crash was due to a “global Microsoft Outlook outage.” However, multiple independent checks revealed no such global outage had occurred. The explanation, officials now believe, was a cover-up — a deflection aimed at avoiding responsibility for a likely internal failure.
“This isn’t just an inconvenience. It’s a breakdown of basic government function,” said one source familiar with the matter. “Residents can’t get permits, can’t follow up on violations, can’t communicate with police or council members. And there’s been no clear explanation or accountability.”
The township’s website remains functional, but no notice about the outage has been posted, reportedly because the web administrator cannot access the linked Outlook-based email to log in and update the page.
The only public acknowledgment has come in the form of a brief Facebook post on the Township Council’s page, which read: “At this time the Jackson Township email server is experiencing technical issues. If you need to reach the township for an urgent matter please call 732-928-1200. If you are trying to contact the police department, please call 732-928-1111.”
