Cedar Swamp Road, a critical corridor for commuters and school transportation in Jackson, will remain closed indefinitely after Ocean County engineers and contractors determined the site remains impassable due to unanticipated utility work, officials announced Thursday.
The announcement follows a meeting between the county’s engineering department, project contractors, and the Jackson Police Department’s traffic bureau. Police emphasized the closure decision is beyond the township’s control, citing incomplete utility installations that have left the roadway unsafe for any traffic.
“They have indicated that they hope it does not take long but have not given a time frame,” Jackson police said in a statement. “We do not want to put out when the road will be re-opened in the event that also changes again.”
The closure continues to disrupt daily travel, forcing detours and complicating school transportation plans. Township officials confirmed the school board and transportation department have been notified and are expected to issue updated instructions for parents and students.
“This poses an inconvenience to the agency as well for emergency vehicles,” police noted, adding that officers will remain stationed at the site to enforce the closure.
Authorities warned residents not to ignore the barricades or attempt to cut through the intersection. “Please refrain from driving to or attempting to go through that intersection as it is still ‘CLOSED,’” the statement read. Officers will continue to monitor the area.
