Jackson Township Awarded $204K Federal Grant for Roadway Safety Planning

Jackson Township has been awarded $204,000 through the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program, funding that local officials say will support planning efforts aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.

The grant application was led by Mayor Jennifer Kuhn, who took a hands-on role in organizing the submission process. Township officials said Kuhn formed an internal team, established monthly coordination meetings and maintained consistent follow-up throughout the competitive federal application process.

The SS4A program is administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation and provides funding to local governments to develop data-driven strategies to improve roadway safety.

Eligible uses of the funds include safety action planning, crash data analysis, public outreach and identifying approaches to reduce traffic-related injuries and deaths for all road users, including drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, seniors and people with disabilities.

With the award, Jackson Township plans to move forward with a comprehensive review of local roadway safety conditions. Planned efforts may include analyzing crash trends, identifying high-risk roads and intersections, gathering public input and developing a prioritized roadway safety action plan.

Township officials said the planning work will also position Jackson to pursue future implementation grants for safety improvements.

Mordechai Burnstein, the Township Council president, praised the effort behind the application. “We are grateful to Mayor Jennifer Kuhn for her hard work in securing this grant,” Burnstein said. “Her efforts will help Jackson Township take important steps toward safer roads for all residents.”

Officials said the Township’s next grant coordination meeting will focus on finalizing the award agreement and working with the Federal Highway Administration to formally launch the project.

Township leaders said the grant will allow Jackson to take a closer look at its roadway safety needs and plan improvements intended to make local roads safer for residents and visitors alike.
