Jackson Public Schools have experienced a precipitous decline in enrollment over the past decade, with public school student numbers falling from 8,190 in the 2017-2018 school year to a projected 6,345 in 2026-2027—a drop of 22.52 percent, according to district data.
The decline stands in stark contrast to surging enrollment in private schools within the district’s boundaries. Nonpublic school enrollment has grown dramatically from 675 students in 2017-2018 to a projected 8,534 by 2026-2027, representing an increase of 1,164% percent over the decade. Meanwhile, thousands of more students are bused into Lakewood each day to attend other private schools.
The enrollment shifts arrive as Jackson School District announced the appointment of a new superintendent. Dan Baginski was selected as the next Superintendent of Schools following Board of Education approval on April 29, 2026.
The Board of Education characterized Baginski as bringing “strong fiscal acumen, a demonstrated ability to inspire academic excellence, and a clear, forward-thinking vision for the future of our schools.”
“Mr. Baginski understands the complexities of our district and is exceptionally well-prepared to guide us forward with purpose and confidence,” the superintendent search co-chairs said in a statement. “He will require no learning curve to begin addressing the many and varied needs of our students, staff, and community.”
The district stated that Baginski’s selection followed a “thoughtful, thorough, and inclusive search process” grounded in community and staff feedback. The process developed a comprehensive candidate profile reflecting the district’s mission and shared priorities.
Baginski will assume leadership of a district navigating significant demographic, enrollment, and financial challenges.
