Jackson Proposes Shutting Middle School, Consolidating High Schools

The Jackson School District has unveiled a sweeping restructuring plan aimed at consolidating its schools to optimize resources and address long-term costs. The proposal includes closing Goetz Middle School, converting Jackson Memorial High School into a middle school for 7th and 8th graders, and designating Jackson Liberty High School as the district’s sole high school.

Under the plan, which will be presented to the Board of Education for consideration, the district would implement significant grade realignments. Students in PreK through 4th grade would remain at their current elementary schools, while McAuliffe Middle School would transition into an upper elementary school for all 5th and 6th graders. Jackson Memorial High School, originally opened in 1963, would serve as a middle school, and Jackson Liberty High School, a modern facility that opened in 2006, would accommodate all 9th through 12th graders.

The plan also involves selling or renting Goetz Middle School to reduce operating costs.

The restructuring proposal is the result of recommendations from the School Reimagining and Resource Planning (SRRP) Committee, which reviewed district resources and student enrollment trends.

Over the years, the district has invested tens of millions of dollars into upgrades at Jackson Memorial High School, including HVAC systems, bathroom renovations, and technology improvements, but officials noted that the school remains an aging facility.

The Board of Education will make the final decision on whether to implement the restructuring. A timeline for potential changes, along with additional details, will be discussed at upcoming board meetings.
