The Jackson Police Department has issued a warning to drivers regarding counterfeit license plates being sold online, emphasizing that displaying these plates on vehicles is illegal under New Jersey law.
Authorities have recently observed an increase in the use of these unauthorized plates across the state, prompting concerns about potential violations and penalties.
“These license plates that are available online for purchase have been appearing on vehicles around the state,” the department said. “These license plates are illegal to display on your vehicle and constitute a violation of N.J.S.A. 39:3-38, which prohibits counterfeiting or using other markers, as well as placing forged or counterfeit plates on motor vehicles.”
Police are reminding residents that the only legal license plates in New Jersey are those issued by the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). Any other plates—regardless of their appearance or claims of legitimacy—are considered fraudulent.
“Please keep this in mind before choosing to waste your money on something on the internet,” the department cautioned.
Drivers found using counterfeit plates could face fines and other legal consequences.
