Captain John Giovanetti, a 25-year veteran of the Jackson Police Department, has announced his retirement effective January 1, 2025. His last working day will be Wednesday, December 18, 2024, marking the end of an accomplished career dedicated to public safety and the Jackson community.
Captain Giovanetti began his career in 1999 after graduating from the Ocean County Police Academy (Class #74). He was initially assigned to the Midnight Shift, where he gained valuable experience in patrol operations. In 2007, he transitioned to the Detective Bureau, investigating a wide range of crimes and incidents. Two years later, he was promoted to Sergeant and returned to the Midnight Shift, supervising a squad of officers.
In 2015, Captain Giovanetti was promoted to Lieutenant, where he took on significant leadership responsibilities. He supervised multiple squads, including Alpha Platoon and Charlie Squad 1, consisting of six sergeants and numerous officers. For about a year, he also managed Bravo Platoon and Charlie Squad 2, effectively overseeing two shifts simultaneously.
In his role as Captain, Giovanetti has had two lieutenants, 12 sergeants, and approximately 55 officers under his command. Additionally, he has supervised the Jackson Police Communications Room, overseeing a team that includes one Supervising Telecommunications Officer, 10 full-time telecommunicators, and five part-time telecommunicators.
Captain Giovanetti’s extensive education and training have been cornerstones of his career. He holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Ocean County College and has attended classes at the College of New Jersey. Over the years, he has earned numerous commendations and completed advanced supervision and leadership courses. He has also served as the department’s Municipal Counter Terrorism Coordinator, further enhancing the agency’s preparedness and security initiatives.
Reflecting on his career, Captain Giovanetti expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the community and work alongside dedicated colleagues.
“It has been a pleasure to serve with the Jackson Police Department and to serve the residents of Jackson Township,” he shared. “I enjoyed working with each and every one of you, whether you are part of the township or an outside department or company we’ve worked with.”
