The Jackson Police Department is urging drivers to obey posted detour signs and road closure warnings, as violations continue to mount near a major construction zone that has shuttered several key roadways in the township.
Cedar Swamp Road remains fully closed between Bennetts Mills/West Veterans Highway and East/West Commodore Boulevard. In addition, Jackson Mills Road is closed beyond Frank Applegate, and Freehold Road is closed past Mallard Court. A comprehensive system of detour signs has been placed throughout the area to redirect traffic.
Despite extensive signage—including up to six “Road Closed” or “Road Closed to Thru Traffic” notices at each end of the closures, as well as multiple concrete Jersey barriers—numerous drivers have continued to disregard the warnings and enter the work zones. The Jackson Police Department reports that an “extremely high number” of summonses have already been issued to motorists who bypass the barricades.
“These closures are not arbitrary,” the department said in a statement. “The work zones are unsafe for vehicle travel, and ignoring signage not only endangers drivers, but also the workers operating in rapidly changing and hazardous conditions.”
The department further warned that anyone entering the work zones without residing or conducting business within the limited affected areas could be stopped and cited.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are also urged to stay away from the construction sites, where shifting ground and ongoing work present serious safety risks.
“Please respect the barriers and posted signs. These are in place to protect everyone—drivers, workers, and residents alike,” the department stated. “We understand the closures are inconvenient and prolonged, but public safety must come first.”
Motorists are advised to plan alternate routes and allow for additional travel time.
