Jackson Township Mayor Jen Kuhn and the Township Council have announced a coordinated effort with Ocean County to improve traffic flow and safety on two of the township’s busiest roadways — Brewers Bridge Road and Cooksbridge Road — following increased congestion near Jackson Liberty High School.
The consolidation of two high schools into one at the Jackson Liberty campus has significantly increased vehicle and bus traffic in the area, leading to longer delays and heightened safety concerns for motorists, students, and pedestrians.
In response, township officials are partnering with the Ocean County Board of Commissioners, the Ocean County Road Department, the Jackson Police Department, the Jackson Board of Education, and the township’s civil engineers to develop and implement a set of roadway and traffic improvements.
The plan under review may include:
- Modifying the traffic signal at the Cooksbridge and Brewers Bridge Road intersection;
- Establishing dedicated turn-only lanes to improve traffic movement; and
- Adding a dedicated turning lane along Brewers Bridge Road to reduce congestion during peak hours.
In addition, the township will study local traffic patterns around Jackson Liberty High School and explore measures to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety — such as installing sidewalks, striping shoulders, signage, and other safety infrastructure.
According to Jackson School District officials, more than 2,000 students, 150 staff members, and 50 school buses use the area daily, creating bottlenecks during arrival and dismissal hours.
Jackson Township has applied for federal Department of Transportation grants to help fund the project.
Council President Mordechai Burnstein, who serves as the township’s liaison to the county, said he has been in close communication with Ocean County officials and residents.
“Residents have raised legitimate concerns, and we’ve made sure those voices are heard,” Burnstein said. “The county and the township are now working together on an actionable plan to make these roads safer and more efficient.”
Township officials said additional updates will be shared with residents as the project moves forward.
