In an unprecedented move to accommodate Shomer Shabbos voters, Jackson Township Fire District #3 has extended in-person voting hours for its February 15 fire budget referendum to 10 PM. The extension allows observant Jewish residents to vote after Havdalah and highlights the district’s commitment to inclusivity.
Fire District Commissioner Frank C. Hruschka led the initiative, requesting the extension from the Ocean County Board of Elections. “We now have a large block of constituents observing Shabbat. This change ensures they can vote without compromising their religious observances,” Hruschka explained. The Board approved the request, and the district formalized the extension through a resolution on January 13.
The 2025 budget referendum comes as Fire Station #55 faces rising challenges, including a 13% spike in 911 calls and a shortage of volunteer firefighters. Last year’s budget was rejected, largely due to a lack of public awareness, according to Hruschka. “This year, we’re explaining how the budget impacts safety and taxpayers,” he said. The proposed budget’s tax impact is estimated at just $8 per month for the average homeowner.
Key budget items include:
- Maintaining two paid firefighters for weekend and holiday coverage.
- Essential maintenance on a 17-year-old tower ladder truck.
- Updated training and equipment to meet modern safety standards.
- Facility upgrades for faster emergency response.
Residents can vote in person at Station #55 on February 15 from 2 PM to 10 PM or submit a vote-by-mail ballot, postmarked by February 15 and received by February 17.
