The Jackson Fire Bureaus are now accepting permit applications for Lag Ba’omer bonfires.
Officials are reminding residents and event organizers that all Lag Ba’Omer fires require both a permit and an inspection from the appropriate Jackson Fire Bureau. Applications must be submitted at least seven days in advance and must be fully completed under the Type I – Bonfires/Campfires category, including details such as the anticipated ignition time and the name of the responsible party.
Authorities emphasized that any unpermitted fires will be extinguished and may result in summonses, and that failure to pay the $54 permit fee will result in cancellation.
The Fire Bureau also outlined strict safety regulations. Bonfires are limited to a maximum size of three feet by three feet by three feet and may not burn for longer than three hours. Fires must be located at least 25 feet from any structure and fueled only with approved materials, such as seasoned hardwood. The use of flammable liquids is strictly prohibited.
Organizers must ensure proper extinguishing equipment is on hand, such as a garden hose, and a responsible adult must supervise the fire at all times and remain on site for at least 30 minutes after it is extinguished. Officials also stressed that fires must be fully put out and that ashes should not be disposed of in trash receptacles.
The Jackson Fire Bureaus noted that permits may be denied if weather conditions make open burning unsafe, in accordance with state fire restrictions.
Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, follow all safety guidelines, and contact their local fire district with any questions as the holiday approaches.
