SAFETY ALERT: Fire Officials Warn of Electric Scooter, E-Bike Fire Hazard

The Jackson Fire Department is warning residents to be mindful of how they care for their electric scooters and e-bikes, which contain lithium-ion batteries which come with a significant fire risk.

The fire department noted that in the last 24 hours, FDNY Fire Marshals have determined that there were four accidental electrical fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in electric scooters/e-Bikes. At these four fires, a total of twelve people were injured. To date this year, there have been more than forty fires caused by lithium-ion batteries in electric scooters/E-Bikes, resulting in twenty injuries.

If using a lithium battery, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage. Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the device. If a battery overheats, discontinue use immediately.
