The Jackson Township Council responded to residents frustrated by a lack of code enforcement on properties with unresolved landlord registration violations.
Council President Jennifer Kuhn clarified its role in government, explaining that as the legislative branch — similar to Congress or the Senate — the Council does not oversee township employees or departments. That responsibility lies entirely with the mayor’s office and the municipal administration, which serve as the executive branch and are charged with carrying out and enforcing ordinances passed by the council.
While the council can request that township ordinances be enforced, it has no authority to compel employees to act. It is ultimately the mayor’s responsibility to ensure complaints are addressed and that code enforcement staff and other agencies fulfill their obligations.
