Howell Police Crack Down on Underage and Illegal Vape Sales, Issuing 21 Violations

Following two undercover operations, Howell Police issued 21 violations for underage and illegal sales of flavored vape products at vape shops, gas stations, and convenience stores throughout the town. The operation was part of a targeted effort to curb illegal sales of e-cigarettes and vaping devices to minors, which has contributed to a growing youth vaping crisis.

During an Aug. 20th town council meeting, Captain Tom Rizzo of the Howell Police Department, Howell Alliance Coordinator Christa Riddle, and Code Enforcement Officer John Aguiar presented updates on the town’s enforcement of ordinances related to smoking in public places and the sale of electronic smoking devices and tobacco products. The trio emphasized their commitment to keeping Howell’s youth safe from harmful substances.

Disposable vape products have been identified as a major appeal to young people, due in part to enticing flavors, sleek and colorful packaging, trendy names, and marketing tactics that specifically target minors. These products also often contain high concentrations of nicotine, further driving addiction among teens and young adults, despite the legal age for purchasing tobacco or nicotine products being 21.

The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over the public health impact of vaping on adolescents. Many of these devices contain not only nicotine but also potent, hemp-derived THC and other mind-altering substances, raising alarms about potential mental health risks. Health officials have warned that even brief use of these products can trigger anxiety, depression, paranoia, psychosis, and suicidal thoughts in vulnerable young users.

The town leaders praised the efforts of the police and community organizations for taking proactive steps to address the problem and emphasized their ongoing commitment to keeping dangerous products out of the hands of minors in Howell.

  1. Someone please send the Howell police department Yisroel Bessers “Voice in the Crowd” about why we should do things to prevent our kids from vaping. These cops need to learn that they’re just doing a disservice to all our kids.
