In a significant move to expand voter access, Governor Phil Murphy has signed S3990/A5370, a bill that extends the in-person early voting period for primary elections in New Jersey. The law, which takes effect immediately, increases the early voting period from three to six days for non-presidential primaries and from five to six days for presidential primaries. The state will allocate $6 million from the General Fund to support the expansion.
“I am proud to sign legislation to make democracy more accessible here in New Jersey,” said Governor Murphy. “Millions of voters have taken advantage of in-person early voting since its establishment just four years ago. This bill will give voters ample time to go to the polls to ensure their voices are heard by Election Day.”
The measure comes after a record-breaking turnout in 2024, when nearly 1.2 million New Jerseyans participated in early in-person voting for the general election. State leaders hope the expanded timeline will further boost voter participation and ease congestion at polling places.
