New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Monday called on President Donald Trump to eliminate New York’s congestion pricing program, describing it as a “disaster for New Jersey commuters” and urging federal intervention.
In a letter to Trump, Murphy criticized New York Governor Kathy Hochul for imposing the toll system, which began on January 5. The program charges passenger vehicles $9 during peak hours and up to $21.60 for trucks and buses in Manhattan south of 60th Street, with fees reduced by 75% at night.
Murphy, a Democrat, accused Hochul, also a Democrat, of burdening New Jersey motorists who already pay steep tolls to enter Manhattan through the Port Authority’s Hudson River crossings.
“New York’s scheme is poorly designed, inadequately studied, and rushed through federal approvals without proper analysis,” Murphy said.
Trump has previously pledged to end congestion pricing, aligning with Murphy’s call to protect New Jersey commuters from what he views as an unfair policy.
