Emergency crews from across Freehold converged on a scrap metal facility Thursday afternoon after a fire sent heavy smoke through the area and prompted temporary road closures, local officials said.
The blaze broke out at Beacon Scrap Metal shortly before 4 p.m., leading the Freehold Borough Police Department to close Throckmorton Street between Rhea Street and Route 9 while fire crews worked at the scene. Freehold Fire Department Station 15 reported that multiple mutual aid companies were also dispatched to assist with the response.
Officials said the fire produced “excessive smoke,” creating a noticeable odor in surrounding neighborhoods and contributing to reduced air quality. EMS units responding to the scene requested additional personnel and ambulances as operations continued.
Police advised residents to keep doors and windows closed and to limit outdoor activity until conditions improved.
By Friday morning, the air quality in Freehold Borough had returned to “good” levels.
