Forecasts calling for a significant snowstorm across the Lakewood area failed to materialize overnight Friday into Shabbos morning, leaving residents with little more than a light coating of ice rather than the several inches of snow that had been predicted.
In the days leading up to the storm, meteorologists had warned of a potentially impactful winter system, with snowfall projections ranging from approximately 3 to 8 inches for parts of Ocean County, including Lakewood. Those forecasts prompted preparations by municipal public works departments and residents alike.
However, by Shabbos morning, most areas reported only a thin dusting of snow, with icy patches proving to be the primary concern. While snowfall amounts were minimal, the presence of ice created hazardous conditions on sidewalks, driveways, and roadways, increasing the risk of slips and falls.
Officials cautioned that the danger has not fully passed. Temperatures remained below freezing through much of Saturday, allowing ice and black ice to persist, particularly on untreated surfaces and secondary roads.
The threat is expected to continue until Sunday afternoon, when temperatures are forecast to rise above freezing.
Forecasters say a late-afternoon rainstorm on Sunday is expected to help melt and wash away remaining ice and snow, improving travel conditions heading into the new week.
Residents are advised to continue exercising caution while walking or driving until conditions fully improve.
