A fire erupted beneath an eastbound PATH train early Monday morning, forcing evacuations, sending several passengers to the hospital, and prompting widespread service suspensions across the transit system.
The fire broke out at approximately 6:19 a.m. as the train passed through Newport Station in Jersey City. Thick smoke quickly filled the station, and passengers were evacuated onto the platform as emergency crews responded.
Thirteen individuals were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation. Nine were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation, authorities said.
The incident caused significant service disruptions, with suspensions between Hoboken and World Trade Center, Hoboken and 33rd Street, and between Journal Square and 33rd Street stations.
PATH employees and the Jersey City Fire Department were on-site to contain the situation. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
