Dirt Bike Rider Killed In Devastating Accident At Off-Limits Site In Manchester

A Brooklyn man lost his life in a devastating dirt bike accident at the off-limits Heritage Minerals site in Manchester on Saturday morning.

At approximately 11:56 a.m., Manchester Township Police officers rushed to the scene, also known as ASARCO, following reports of a severe crash involving a single dirt bike. What they found was grim—a blue 2024 Yamaha YZ450F dirt bike lying abandoned in the sand and, nearby, its rider, unresponsive.

The victim, later identified as 28-year-old Joseph W. Maffia of Brooklyn, NY, had been ejected from his dirt bike after encountering the crest of a steep hill. The sudden ten-foot drop sent him hurtling forward, causing him to collide face-first with a sand embankment. Despite wearing a DOT-approved helmet, the impact proved catastrophic.

Fellow riders at the site desperately attempted life-saving measures before emergency responders arrived. Manchester EMS swiftly transported Maffia to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where, despite efforts to revive him, he was pronounced dead.

Emergency personnel from multiple agencies, including paramedics from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, volunteers from the Manchester, Ridgeway, and Whiting Fire Departments, and investigators from the Ocean County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit, responded to the tragedy. The wreckage was later removed by Priced Rite Towing.

Investigators from the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit, led by Ptl. Brendan Brush, have preliminarily determined that the primary cause of the fatal crash was the unsafe operation of a dirt bike on private property.

In the wake of this tragedy, police are once again reminding the public that the Heritage Minerals site is strictly off-limits for recreational use. Despite clear “No Trespassing” signs posted throughout the area, unauthorized riders continue to access the dangerous, unstable landscape—a risk that, as this incident tragically illustrates, can have deadly consequences.

Those caught trespassing at the site face severe legal repercussions, including hefty fines and potential incarceration.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
