Despite Rising Antisemitic Threats, Gov. Sherrill Budget Axes Security Funding for BMG

Antisemitic attacks are up. Threats against Jewish institutions have multiplied. And New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill wants to cut security funding for the largest yeshiva in the United States.

Sherrill’s proposed $60.7 billion budget for Fiscal Year 2027 eliminates a $2 million line item that had been designated for security and anti-terrorism measures at Beth Medrash Govoha in Lakewood. The funding, a fixture in former Governor Phil Murphy’s annual budgets, was intended to support safety enhancements at the yeshiva, which enrolls more than 10,000 students.

The cut does not stand alone. Sherrill’s budget also reduces the state’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program — which provides funding to religious institutions and other nonprofits for security personnel, surveillance systems and protective infrastructure — by $3 million, dropping it from $10 million to $7 million.

The reductions come at a moment when New Jersey had in recent years been moving in the opposite direction, increasing security grant funding precisely because of heightened concern about antisemitic incidents and threats against Jewish institutions.

Sherrill has framed her budget as a necessary response to a fiscal crunch, prioritizing core spending and pulling back on discretionary allocations across the board. Funding for busing and education programs that Lakewood residents depend on was preserved, though not expanded.

This is just the beginning – wait until the Democrat party is in control of the White House and the Congress. AOC, Omar, Rashid & Co. will make it clear that there is no future for Jews in the USA.
