Deadly Dispute In Ocean County: Two Shot, Gunman Found Dead After SWAT Standoff

A quiet neighborhood in Ocean County was shaken by violence Monday evening when a man shot his next-door neighbors before barricading himself inside his home, leading to a tense standoff with law enforcement.

The incident unfolded on Monday at approximately 4:45 p.m., when the Berkeley Township Police Department received a frantic 911 call reporting two gunshot victims at a residence on Drake Drive. Responding officers arrived to a horrific scene—a husband and wife, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical teams swiftly airlifted the critically wounded couple to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where they remain in stable condition.

Investigators from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit and Berkeley Township Police Department quickly identified the shooter as John Adamo, 54, the victims’ next-door neighbor. Authorities believe Adamo first opened fire on the male victim while he was outside, then shot into the couple’s home, striking the female victim.

After the shooting, Adamo retreated inside his residence, prompting a large-scale response from the Ocean County Regional SWAT Team and the Crisis Negotiating Team. Officers surrounded his home and attempted to persuade him to surrender peacefully. For nearly two and a half hours, authorities worked to de-escalate the situation.

Ultimately, SWAT officers breached the residence and made their way upstairs, where they discovered Adamo in a bedroom—dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

However, the drama didn’t end there. As officers secured the scene, they spotted a pressure cooker inside the bedroom, raising immediate concerns over a potential explosive device. As a precaution, authorities evacuated nearby homes while the New Jersey State Police Bomb Squad assessed the situation. After a tense period of uncertainty, experts determined that the pressure cooker was not an explosive device, allowing residents to return to their homes.
