A brilliant fireball lit up the skies along the East Coast on Monday night, captivating viewers across New Jersey and beyond. The American Meteor Society reported that over 230 people from eastern states witnessed the meteor streak across the sky between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.
Reports flooded in from various communities in New Jersey, including Lakewood, Toms River, and many other municipalities. Witnesses described the meteor as having various hues, with many noting a vivid greenish glow, while others reported seeing more traditional reddish or white colors.
The sighting coincided with the peak of the Taurid meteor shower, known for producing especially bright fireballs. Observers from as far north as Toronto and as far south as Richmond, Virginia, also spotted the phenomenon, with sightings stretching westward to Grand Rapids, Michigan.
The dazzling display comes ahead of Friday’s final supermoon of the year, as well as the Leonid meteor shower, which will peak late on Sunday, Nov. 17, into Monday morning.
