Curling Iron Mistaken for Weapon, Leads to Panic at Monmouth University

Students at Monmouth University were advised to shelter-in-place on Wednesday night after police received frantic reports of an armed individual on campus.

Few details were available Wednesday night as multiple agencies converged on the university’s campus to investigate, with some reports that there were several shots fired. Contrary to some reports, police never confirmed that any shots were fired.

The shelter-in-place was lifted at 1:40 am Thursday morning after police used security footage to identify a person of interest – a currently enrolled student.

Turns out, the student was innocently walking on the school’s campus with a curling iron, which another student mistook for a weapon and called police.

All operations at the university campus have now returned to normal, though an elevated police presence remains to calm students’ frazzled nerves and Thursday’s classes will only begin at noon.
