Coastal Storm Threatens Jersey Shore With Flooding, Strong Winds

A developing coastal storm and days of persistent northeast winds are raising concerns for significant coastal flooding, strong winds and beach erosion along the Jersey Shore through the end of the week.

The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Warning for Ocean County and portions of South Jersey from Wednesday afternoon through early Friday. Forecasters say one to two feet of water above ground level could inundate low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Widespread roadway flooding is possible in coastal and bayside communities, with some roads potentially becoming impassable during high tide. Vulnerable structures could also see some damage.

Strong onshore winds are expected to continue through at least Thursday, pushing additional ocean water toward the coast and producing rough surf and beach erosion.

Forecasters are also monitoring a developing nor’easter that could impact the region later this week and into the weekend. The storm’s exact track remains uncertain, but coastal flooding, rough surf and gusty winds are expected to remain concerns regardless of its final path.

Residents in flood-prone areas are urged to monitor forecasts and avoid driving through flooded roadways.
