A Lakewood bochur who was critically injured in a hit-and-run crash on Hope Chapel Road on the Friday night of Shabbos Hagadol has been released from the hospital and is now recovering at home, with expectations for a full recovery.
The bochur, Daniel Shmuel ben Shifra, was struck at approximately 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Hope Chapel Road and Clearstream Road as he was heading to shul for davening. Authorities said the vehicle involved fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Hatzolah arrived quickly and provided critical on-scene care before transporting him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center. He was initially listed in critical but stable condition, and improved considerably in the subsequent days before returning home.
A joint investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit–Vehicular Homicide Squad, the Lakewood Police Department, and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit determined that a Hyundai Elantra traveling northbound struck the victim before leaving the area without stopping.
Investigators later identified the driver as Jose Perez-Parada. He was taken into custody at Lakewood Township Police Headquarters and subsequently transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he faces serious charges.
