BMG May Soon Be Required To Provide National Suicide Hotline Number To All Talmidim

Under a bill that passed 36-0 in the New Jersey Senate on Monday, BMG could be required to provide its talmidim with the hotline number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, the NJ Hopeline, or other 24/7 mental health hotline approved by the New Jersey Department of Education.

In addition to providing talmidim with the hotline numbers, BMG would be required to post the hotline numbers in each dormitory, library, and student center, “and any other facility or area on campus that the institution determines to be appropriate.”

The bill would potentially also require BMG to annually conduct a mental health public awareness campaign on campus designed to provide students with information on depression and suicide; raise awareness about the mental health services available on and off campus; and reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health services.

While BMG is not stated in the bill, the legislation applies to all “institutions of higher education,” which Beth Medrash Govoha is.

  1. This happens to be a good thing.

First of all, it’s very healthy for the more close minded to learn a bit more about what’s going on in the world.

Secondly, there unfortunately are many people suffering with mental health problems. It would help them understand recognize it, learn how to deal with it, and possibly prevent pain and save lives.

  2. This could not be further from the truth. The so called “close minded people” that you refer to on average lead far more happy & fufilling lives that the rest of people in this country. Your premise that its important to know what’s going on in the world actually contradicts that of which most mental health professionals agree that, following the news actually increases anxiety & does far more harm than it does good. Its clear that your agenda is obviously rooted in haskalah ideology which has no place in our frum society. This is not to say mental health is not important rather that the way the goyim go about it is far from conclusively effective & more importantly you are not here to help but rather lecture those who are ovdie hashem.

  3. Um… Actually sorry to ruin this story but they already have the number posted in the dorms and in the application forms for many years already.
