A heartwarming program is encouraging Lakewood parents to teach their children the value of kindness by sending an extra nosh to camp this summer. Dubbed the “Gitty Nosh” project, the initiative asks parents to spend just an extra dollar when packing their child’s treats for trip days, so their child can offer a snack to another camper who may have forgotten theirs or whose family couldn’t provide one.
The program is named in memory of Gitty Greenberg, a”h, who was known for her lifelong dedication to looking out for others, especially children who might be lacking. Her sister-in-law, Devorah Wahl, launched the initiative to honor Gitty’s legacy and inspire a new generation to notice and include those around them.
“Gitty spent her days always looking out for the kid who didn’t have, for the person who needed to be remembered,” Devorah Wahl explained. “This is a simple, beautiful way to carry on that spirit.”
Parents are encouraged to speak with their children before camp trip days and remind them to watch for anyone who might not have a nosh to enjoy. The program stresses that the treat need not be fancy or expensive — even a snack for $1 can brighten a child’s day. Healthy options are welcome as well.
This small act of chesed can go a long way in building children’s sensitivity and creating a culture of inclusion. “May Hashem see us all looking out for each other and bring Moshiach,” Mrs. Wahl wrote in her message.
Lakewood camps and groups are invited to have Mrs. Wahl speak about the program in person; she can be reached at 646-229-9753.
For parents interested in participating, simply tell your child to bring along a “Gitty Nosh” — and help every camper feel remembered and cared for.
