BD”E: Jewish Surgeon Niftar After Suffering Medical Episode On Garden State Parkway In Lakewood

Dr. Jarrod P. Kaufman, a prominent surgeon from Toms River and a founding member of Premier Surgical in Brick, died Thursday morning after his car veered off the Garden State Parkway when he suffered a medical episode.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:10 a.m. near milepost 88.2 northbound, where Kaufman’s Tesla Model Y ran off the roadway and into a briar patch, according to New Jersey State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron. Authorities believe Kaufman, 54, suffered a medical episode before the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

Kaufman was widely recognized for his contributions to the medical field, specializing in general and laparoscopic surgery. He was a founding member of Premier Surgical Group and Premier Vein Center in Brick and was affiliated with Ocean University Medical Center in Brick and Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus in Lakewood. He also maintained offices in Monmouth and Camden counties.

Beyond his private practice, Kaufman was deeply involved in medical education and humanitarian efforts. He served as president of Hernia Repair for the Underserved, an organization dedicated to educating surgeons and providing care for underserved populations. He was also a clinical faculty member at the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, where he was described as a “laparoscopic surgeon, public speaker, medical consultant, cancer prevention advocate, and surgical mission team leader.”

Kaufman’s extensive career included roles as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Temple University School of Medicine and as chairman of surgery at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus Hospital. He also held leadership positions with the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer and the New Jersey Governor’s Task Force on Cancer Prevention.

A graduate of Lehigh University with a degree in biology, Kaufman earned his medical degree from the Sackler School of Medicine in Tel Aviv, Israel, in 1997. He was committed to providing cutting-edge surgical care and was an advocate for minimally invasive procedures and cancer prevention.
